What is Pregnancy and Infant Loss?

Pregnancy and Infant Loss is a broad term for the loss of a child during pregnancy or after birth.  These causes could be from miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, stillbirth, birth defect, neonatal death, SIDS, accident and so on.

Stillbirth, for decades, has been overlooked and disregarded as the number one mechanism for child death. Estimates range from 25,000 to 39,000 stillbirths annually in the U.S. That is approximately 83 per day or 4 per hour.

Researchers Estimate that among women who already know they are pregnant, nearly fifteen percent will have a miscarriage.

According to national statistics, stillbirths occur in nearly one in 200 pregnancies in the United States every year.

Premature birth occurs in between eight and ten percent of all pregnancies in the United States;  it remains one of the top causes of infant death in this country.

SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies after one month of age.  Researchers estimate that SIDS is the cause of about 2,500 infant deaths each year.

In 2000, there were 2,181 SIDS deaths reported in the United States. That year there were over 26,000 S.A.D.S. (Sudden Antenatal Death Syndrome) deaths [stillbirths] reported, almost 12 times as many.
